What is a Gastric Balloon Procedure?

The Gastric Balloon is one of the modern weight loss procedures sought out by a large number of people to shed excess weight and have been unable (or found it difficult) to do so with regular exercise and a diet regime. The procedure consists of placing a silicone balloon filled with salt water inside the patient’s stomach, which would help to reduce quantities of food consumed and lead to a faster feeling of fullness, thus minimising overall food intake and losing weight. The Gastric Balloon procedure is performed on individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) under 35.

Overview

of the Procedure

Upon lightly sedating the patient, the doctor will insert the Gastric Balloon through the mouth and esophagus using a thin tube (endoscope) which comes equipped with a camera on one end, and the salt-water-filled balloon on the other. Said balloon will remain in the stomach for a period of 6 months up to a year, after which it will gradually shrink in size and be subsequently removed to prevent any complications.

Anesthesia:

The Gastric Balloon procedure is performed under light sedation, and usually takes about 30 minutes to complete. The patient can leave the hospital on the same day after ensuring the stability of their health condition.

Duration of Stay:

This procedure is performed in a single day.

Post-Op & Aftercare

  • The patient may experience some discomfort or nausea in the first few days after getting the procedure done. Nonetheless, this would be a natural reaction to a foreign object entering the stomach. These symptoms will dissipate with the passage of time.
  • The Gastric Balloon procedure is one of the most successful weight loss procedures, hence its wide popularity amongst individuals seeking to shed excess weight.
  • For three days post-op, the patient must commit to consuming liquid food (soups) and fluids, after which a strict dietary program is necessary

Your case will be monitored by the medical follow-up department on a monthly basis following the operation for a full year to ensure adherence to instructions for the best results.
